Baselworld 2016: DIAGONO MAGNESIUM - TOP-NOTCH TIMING!

This graphically contemporary new model combines high-tech materials ensuring performance, power and agility

The eminently graphic, urban and contemporary Diagono Magnesium took its own special place last year on the scene of sports watches entirely in tune with current values. This vibrantly high-tech watch flaunts its own unique style in a boldly uncompromising manner. Diagono Magnesium now welcomes a much-loved horological complication in the shape of a self-winding chronograph movement. This high-impact masculine sports watch exudes an immediate sense of performance. While this tone in itself corresponds to the spirit of the emblematic Diagono case, the kinship is further heightened by the fact that Diagono Magnesium is a watch developed, structured and assembled in a way comparable to that of the finest modern Italian sports cars. Diagono Magnesium is a compendium of technical sophistication, expressed through the high-tech parts composing its case: magnesium, ceramic, Motorlac and PEEK.

Water-resistant to 100 metres, this exceptional watch is teamed with a vulcanised rubber strap perfectly suited to the style and the contemporary strength of the 42 mm magnesium and PEEK watch. Four versions are available: black, red, blue and grey. The dials are lacquered in the corresponding colour. The B130 calibre powering this model is a mechanical self-winding chronograph movement with a 42-hour power reserve. It is just 6.10 mm thick. A watch with a fiery temperament and an aura of self-assured boldness, Diagono Magnesium Chronograph surprises and appeals through its personality, its versatility and its technical qualities – chief of which is its lightness.

Diagono: the versatile sports watch. Diagono by Bulgari is in a league of its own among sports watches. This technical and sophisticated collection readily adopts an urban, cosmopolitan attitude. Its versatile nature stems from its inspiration rooted in ancient history. The name Diagono comes from the Ancient Greek word agôn – a classic term expressing competition and efficiency demonstrated in compliance with the rules of sportsmanship, in an inherently elegant manner.

The symbol of Myron’s Discobolus (Discus Thrower) sets the tone for Diagono watches. The Discus Thrower is the best-known work by Myron of Eleutherae, a Greek sculptor who worked exclusively in bronze and hailed from the region of Attica. He earned a major place in the history of art and he became famed for both his inventiveness and his boldness, of which the Discobolus provides an eloquent demonstration. The young Greek athlete is depicted in full swing, at the very moment when his perfect, sleekly muscular body expresses the moment of statis just before release of the discus, thereby revealing the play of forces between two opposite movements. By dint of outstanding technical and artistic skill, Myron succeeded in eliminating the customary rigidity of classic sculptures.

With the Discus Thrower, aesthetic truth lies in the balance between grace, strength, power and agility. These very influences pay tribute to the twin cultures instilled into Diagono Magnesium: Swiss watchmaking precision and Italian creative brilliance.

Bulgari Diagono was one of the very first watches to use materials such as aluminium. That was back in 1998 and caused a sensation on the international watchmaking scene, as well as a major upheaval in the design world. Many celebrities adopted it and pop star Sting would never perform on stage without his Diagono watch on his wrist. An airliner regularly criss-crossed the globe flying the Bulgari colours and bearing the effigy of the Diagono watch. A world premiere and an incredibly daring feat. Then came the age of titanium, bringing fresh boldness, a new wager and further success. The rubber strap was also an original touch. In 2015, Diagono introduced a whole new technological dimension with the use of magnesium and the combination of three resolutely technical materials. Each represented a revolution in the often staid world of fine watchmaking. For lovers of style, fashion and design, these were truly daring accomplishments.

Diagono Magnesium is certainly not short on style: on any occasion, in every circumstance, in each situation. Resolutely contemporary and confidently asserting both its sportiness and its sophistication, this watch transitions smoothly from the field of competition and performance to more low-key urban settings, where it remains a visible token of the spirit of conquest nurtured by its wearer.

Magnesium: sturdiness and lightness. Well known for its organic and chemical properties, magnesium is a metal with a silvery white sheen. It is very light and endowed with exceptional mechanical characteristics. It boasts maximum durability for a minimum weight, which makes it hardly surprising that this material is used in cutting-edge technologies such as aviation, space research and Formula 1 racing. Fields in which absolute performance is the ultimate goal and that yield a wealth of research and experimental data that are then used to apply these discoveries to more accessible domains such as the automotive industry and haute horlogerie

Peek and ceramic: cutting-edge materials. Stepping things up a further notch in terms of efficiency, Bulgari has chosen to enhance the Diagono watch with certain elements in PEEK (PolyEtherETherKetone), an ultra-sturdy and light polymer used instead of metals in the design of aircraft and space shuttles. PEEK is distinguished by its exceptional solidity. Its rigidity and its dimensional stability enable it to withstand high-temperature, hostile environments. It is both easy to treat and particularly light compared with steel, aluminium and titanium. The properties of this polymer are partially similar to those of the ceramic from which the bezel of the Diagono Magnesium is made: lightness, extreme wear resistance and imperviousness to scratching.

Motorlac: a high-performance coating. Motorlac is an extremely high-quality protective lacquer used in the field of motorsports. It both clothes and protects the competition-ready mechanics of the finest sports cars. It is however not a purely ornamental or decorative element, but instead a technical component capable of withstanding extreme temperatures or variations in the expansion of materials. Moreover, Motorlac also creates a surprising granulated texture and colourful new reflective effects. That is why the Bulgari designers chose it to develop four proprietary shades specially intended for Diagono Magnesium.
